With 2011 coming to a close, I'm happy to say good riddance. I'm looking forward to all sorts of new beginnings in 2012; a new position with Garrison and Associates, my son will be in Kindergarten {finally}, and I'm hopeful that my family and I will have a year of peace. 2012 Color Forecast: NEUTRAL = ESCAPE

This is the last of the four important color categories for 2012 according to the ColorMix Course I took from Sherwin Williams. One could argue that this indeed is NOT a color category but rather an important lesson in textural intrigue. I feel it's a bit of both.

Probably the biggest influence on why neutral as a color category is important is technology. We are bombarded daily with upgrades, new gadgets, platforms and must have's. Technology is sleek and plastic; it is man-made.

The idea of a neutral color and its mix of warm and cool tones, linen and wood textures and raw organic feel is a direct escape from technology and its manufactured experience. Neutral allows natural materials to be themselves.

We see this neutral textural approach in architecture at the 2010 World Expo in Shanghai, China with Spain's building "The Basket." This building was constructed using over 8,000 wicker panels in brown, beige, and black over a steel structure showcasing Spain and China's tradition in basket weaving.

In furnishings and interiors we see the importance of wood and its raw form paired with neutral tones. This display from Mitchell Gold & Bob Williams is dubbed "Reclaimed and Retro" and was seen at the 2011 High Point Market as one of the best displays.

Gastronomic news as of late has heralded the importance of grains, ancient and unprocessed. Cooking with dried grass or hay as a fuel source, "d'ans le foin" has grown in popularity. It's all part of the going-back-to-basics movement that has been gaining popularity in recent months.

So, as we look to color in 2012 think also about texture. We want an ESCAPE from technology and a return to textural richness and calming comfortable colors.

Here are the colors from Sherwin Williams listed as the most influential in the neutral category.

2012 Color Forecast: GREEN = GROUNDED

From the depths of the sea to the dark green forests and up to the warmth of rooftop gardens we are inspired by green for 2012 nearly everywhere we look. Green is our "grounded" color category for next year's trend. We see leaf foliage motifs on fabrics, and even furniture as we look again to nature for inspiration. We are more aware of our natural world than ever before and are seeking innovative ways to marry modern life with natural life.

One such innovation is the underwater sculpture park in Cancun, Mexico that was created to attract coral growth that has been depleted with over tourism, fishing, and pollution. Artist Jason deCaires Taylor provided endless sculptures throughout the sea, each now showing traces of sea life 'green' with algae and other plant life growth.

We are looking to Algae as an alternate fuel source as 50% of its weight is oil. Algae could very well become very important in the next few decades as we continually look to live in harmony with the natural world.

We are inspired by our own landscapes, from rice paddys....

To salt ponds...

We see green as a prominent natural color.

In interiors we see rugs like this rug from Florian Pucher reminiscent of the natural landscapes we see pictured above. Greens are dominant with tonal hues taking center stage.

We are literally "grounded" in green by this nature inspired rug from Matali Crasset.

I love these images of how one might use the color green in interior design collected by Casa Diseno.

Green will become important as we continually work together with nature in the coming years.

I'm happy to report on one of my all - time favorite color categories: blue as the next color for 2012. I've always loved blue and its many soothing hues. {If you missed my last two posts on the color seminar I took, read up here.}

2012 World Expo Yeosu, Korea

Blue is water. As our world rediscovers this valuable resource and as it becomes our most important commodity we look to our great oceans for inspiration. We see blue en force at the upcoming 2012 World Expo in Yeosu, Korea with the theme "The Living Ocean and Coast: Diversity of Resources and Sustainable activities".

Blue is work. In America, we love our denim and it represents us as a culture of workers reinventing ourselves endlessly to stay up with the times. Denim represents economy and as we've all felt, the past couple of years have yielded a back-to-basics approach to life.

Blue has been the color of the "workforce" for centuries, especially in denim, and from what I learned, denim may have started in the 17th century in Genoa, Italy! Rugged, down to business, timeless; the ability to move like water and change; that's blue.

House Beautiful

Blue will be come a staple in many interiors, whether is is in the form of a background color or as an accent. House Beautiful recently published a book simply called BLUE: 350 inspiring ways to decorate with blue!

2012 color forecast: RED = LIFE

You may have read "the set-up" last week and learned that after taking a color seminar from Christie and Carolyn I discussed the four color categories for 2012; red, blue, green and neutral. Now, the fun part is sharing why these colors were selected as the most influential hues from fashion, to print, to design. The first color I will share has the most ancient of references...red.

Red is the color of life. It has aboriginal roots in cave wall paintings, is the color of blood and fire, and is deeply spiritual. We are going back to basics; what makes life, what sustains it? We are rethinking ourselves as our world is shrinking and we are more connected; what makes us similar?

Red is bravery and strength as seen in tribes around the globe. We see a lot of Eastern cultures influencing our world these days and red in its myriad of hues is dominant. With so many spiritual options on our doorsteps we are asking the question "what is spirituality and what does it mean to me?"

Red is sexy and bold, it envokes passion and desire. Many have said they haven't seen red in fashion this much since the 1980's when women in the workforce stormed the streets in their bold suits with hues of red accents, red lips, and passion to succeed. With the world's economy shuttering, many people have had to reinvent themselves or their businesses. They've poured energy into new ventures with bold {red} enthusiasm.

So, where does the design world come into all of this? We will see linear references in textiles resembling circulatory systems; interwoven lacy connections in products and even furniture. This company, Nervous System, has designed a way to "grow" a lamp.

Red hues will be mixed and matched, traditional rules of color will be broken. Red and orange will be combined with pink! This is a direct eastern influence. Texture will become the new bling as seen in this room from Maison Moschino in Milan.

So, what now? How do you choose the right red? Sherwin Williams has a list of the "reds" for 2012. I especially love the descriptions they use next to each of the colors:

2012 Color Forecast - The set up

After attending the Sherwin Williams color forecast session I am inspired and excited to share what I learned with each of you. As most of you know, color is an emotional experience. I think that's why it's so difficult to make that decision of what color to paint our office or kitchen. People have strong opinions about color but they don't necessarily understand why. Where we live, global influences, the state of our economy, our need for adventure and our longing for comfort can all be translated into a color. Buy it? You'd be surprised.

Neutral

Color forecasting is a process that takes into consideration where we've been and where we are going on a global level. Fashion and Design tend to drive those color choices home. Think about what has been going on in the world, what are the discussions taking place, the concerns or praises happening across the nations. These are all subconsciously translated into feelings and ultimately into our preference for color.

Red

Ok, enough psychology, but I need to set the stage for the four color categories that represent 2012. You need to understand why they were chosen. I will get into the depths of those choices over the next few days but for now I'll tell you they are: RED, BLUE, GREEN, and NEUTRAL. The nuances of each are important to understand as well as their tonal references.

Green

I love mobile buildings and have written about them, facebooked them, and admired them from afar. I think in another life I must have been a gypsy. This latest installment comes to us by bus, old -Bulgarian -bus -turned-library. Lovely.
Studio 8 1/2 designed this interesting mobile unit to fit into its surrounding bohemian culture. It brings to light the fact that we are on the move as a culture and a world. We need to work with what we have instead of always looking to newer, bigger and better; better might be smaller, older, and have wheels.

Fall-ing for Fall in Color

I adore the Fall; it's my favorite time of year, warm sun, cool evenings, hot cider, pumpkin patches, sweaters, sitting by the fire, reading with a blanket...love it. It got me thinking; how can I recreate the "feeling" of fall in a simple color palette? So, I've been on the hunt for those who, either with brilliant marketing, or with amazing tools, can help me in my quest. I cam across this site which allows you to upload any photo, and it will generate a palette of colors. What I'm really searching for is a company that will do it for a paint color line. Have you found one? I've had clients say they love their outside garden and want to recreate the feel of it inside; wouldn't it be great if they could simply take a photo and upload it somewhere and find out exactly the colors they're searching for?
I have these photos of the vineyard we've been working on this season:I would love to get some paint colors to represent the subtlety of the hues. I could of course stand out there with my paint chips and figure it out, but it would certainly save me a trip!

Yolo Colorhouse has a fun palette they've labeled as "Farm to Table" riding the wave of the hip trend of eating fresh, local produce even at your local restaurant. I love this idea! Here are the others they recommend for 2012.

How do you start a project? When I begin, I usually select a bunch of images either online or in magazines for inspiration. Today is one of those days where I thought I'd better start putting some of those things together. For a small office lobby remodel, I developed this board with a fun background just to get some imagery out there for my clients to see. We all have to start somewhere and it's much easier to SEE something and respond to it rather than IMAGINE how it might look and go from there. Enjoy!

Marketing on the run

How do you market and does it seem to help your business? Last week, my daughter's primary school held their largest fundraiser of the year; a Fun Run. It was a great event for the kids, and parents alike. There was also a 5K run / walk for adults to participate in followed by raffle prizes and goodie bags. This year, I decided to include some marketing for my business in the goodie bags....all 140 of them. So, then began the puzzling dilemma of what to include? How to present myself and my business in a bag full of others doing precisely the same thing? So, this is what I decided to do...

It was a cold and rainy fun run day so I gave out packets of Hot Cocoa with my business card attached; have you tried Starbucks Cocoa, it's fabulous!

To add a bit of inspiration I color coordinated my lovely business cards (see the colored stripes) with the packets. As a designer, they gotta know I can color coordinate, right!

I decided to add something fun, a bit of inspiration. So, I took an old Anthropologie catalogue and hole punched large circles through it; every circle was unique, much like the person receiving it, and I stamped "You Rock" on the circle. To keep it all together I found some fun paper clips at Target and clipped them on the sides.

So, that was it. It was a fun little project to do, and I hope runners and walkers enjoyed them and that they think of me for inspiration in their next remodel.

Finally, here's my daughter, Evelyne, after the run. She is proudly showing off her lap card after running for 15 minutes straight!

What is your Color Personality?

At a color consult this week I tried something different; color by personality. We are all drawn to something somewhere; the hard part is translating that "feeling" into a color. There are several quizzes out there that attempt to tell us who we are in color. Better Homes and Gardens offers one that categorized me as a "Fiery Red" person which if you've been to my house, you know it's all about subtle and calming blues. Maybe because of my 'fiery red' personality I feel the need to calm down at home; not overload my psyche with loads of vibrancy.

My latest project has been in agriculture; most people now bug out their eyes and say "WHAT?" Along with several other family members we have invested some time in raising vegetables of all kinds, bringing back to life a vineyard that has been mis managed for 2 years, and discovering the bounty of apples, prunes, pears, and blackberries on our shared property. My hands now have permanent callouses and stains that I can't seem to get out despite hours of scrubbing and slathering with all manner of oils. Since my mind has been hijacked by all things produce related, I couldn't help but share this article on PreFab Grocery Stores...I call "a small box store."

They call it "Stockbox Grocers." This company's brilliant concept provides "food deserts" (or places lacking fresh produce) a pop up market that supplies healthy nutritious food for purchase all within the walls of a reclaimed shipping container. It's a grocery store that comes to YOU instead of the other way around. The idea is to set up in parking spaces of existing businesses. Think food cart or espresso stand gone larger. The growing company has only been officially around this June of this year and already has generated a buzz. Best of luck to all of them!

Inhabitat has some great photographs of Stockbox in action on their website and a slide show for viewing.

If you know me, you know I have a soft spot for all things "pre-fab." It is architecturally intriguing to me as a low cost building option and I'm curious to see if folks will start to embrace and improve the aesthetics. Could I one day be living and shopping in pre-fab, reclaimed spaces? Only time will tell.

Autism + Design what can they do for each other?

Plenty. As many of us are in the throes of back-to-school, we turn our focus away from the carefree days of summer, and start living a life a bit more scheduled and harried. For a lot of children, this is the norm, but an increasing amount of children with Autism have a much different experience. In steps...a Designer? A recent article in Dezeen showcases up and coming designers at Dezeen Space in London this month. There are designers displaying products like shoes and recycled pencils, graphic designers, textile designers, and architects. In a nutshell, Touch*Play is a voice recording system that requires the participant to touch another person in order to hear the playback. For many children with autism, touch is a very difficult thing.

I enjoy finding things that designers are doing to work across the disciplines and this one struck me on an emotional level. I only wish I could be in London to view this exhibit for myself. May the child in your life have a good school year and be blessed with the gift of touch.

Last night's NeoCan't event was great fun and introduced the latest and greatest products from various vendors. As we walked around the venue at the Jupiter Hotel sipping cocktails and noshing on chicken satay vendors were busy discussing the pros of their products and many uses of them. Since there are so many, I'll focus on one for now and discuss some of the others in future posts.

Yes, I did write on a wall and so did everyone else. Wolf Gordon has a product called Wink that as the clever rep, Ginny Combs stated "is clear and can be used on any wall color without changing it's look"...."what color is it?" (I think she wanted to make sure we were all paying attention) "CLEAR!" The benefit of such a thing is that it turns any paintable surface into a write and erase canvas....OOOO the possibilities! Good bye whiteboards, good bye messy chalk, hello WINK!

Other exciting intros were from Maharam, Tandus, Tom Dixon, Armstrong, Yolo...and many more; plus, my psychic reading which you won't want to miss. All in good time my friends.

Many of us have felt the financial pinch for quite some time...if you haven't you must be living somewhere else, independently wealthy, or dealing in something illegal. For the rest of us, we've been trying to do more with less; a life lesson I have to say is worth living through in the long run.

Remodeling projects have been put on hold, new purchases have turned into "new-to-me" purchases as we've scoured garage sales and second-hand or second-run furnishings. One thing that's always been puzzling to many homeowners and designers is how to turn your not-so-lovely and often dated kitchen or bathroom cabinets into something you can stomach until you can afford a remodel? The answer came to me this week in the form of a pamphlet from Rustoleum....Cabinet Transformation Kits.

These kits can be purchased at home supply stores like Lowes and require no sanding; just applications of various finishes and voila....new cabinets. I'm impressed though haven't known anyone personally that have used them. Have you? What are your thoughts?

ADU's in the everyday

Accessory Dwelling Units, or ADU's have been on the rise in the Portland Metro area for some time. Originally touted as "granny flats" they are gaining new life purpose as the desire for urban density sprawls out to the burbs.

This years' NW Natural Street of Dreams specifically showcases these as enhancements to the overall home footprint. Calling them "creative quarters" ideas range from structures as extra work space, entertaining hubs, to the traditional "mother-in-law" inspired unit and more.

Hammer and Hand, a local company, has a fun time-lapse video showcasing the construction of one of their ADU's.

NeoCon: A designer's inspiration

Some of you know about NeoCon, others don't. That's ok, here's what it is in a nutshell...a very large nutshell the size of Chicago's Merchandise Mart. NeoCon is a trade show (one of the largest in the world) that happens every year in Chicago in June. The purpose is to showcase innovative ideas and fabulous products in interior design. Specifically, furniture, carpet, textile companies all converge for a few days in one place to showcase their best. No, I didnt' go this year, but have in the past and can say it is overwhelmingly amazing. I thought I would share this video from one of the speakers, architect Michael Graves, who discusses briefly and in passing the important marriage of cities to people and their experiences of them within an architectural context.

After picking up a few extra paint chips last week from my local Sherwin Williams store I happened by their new display of easy to use color palettes inspired by HGTV designers. The brilliance of this is that you can simply select one palette that suits you, say Urban Organic, and know that you can mix and match any of the colors within the palette to create one coordinated look throughout your space.

With the elimination of incandescent light bulbs drawing near, manufacturers, builders, home owners, designers and architects have all been desperately trying to keep up. The difficulty is in looking ahead at purchases or specifications today that may be obsolete in the near future thus wasting product and money in the long run; sustainable? I think eventually, we're just in that fuzzy period right now.

One company has recently announced their answer to dimming the new CFL (Compact Fluorescent) and LED lamps which has been a concern. The standard dimmers used with incandescent bulbs don't work with the CFL's or LED's leaving most of us in the lurch if we're designing say a dining room or an area that doesn't need a blast of light. Thank you Lutron for trying to keep up; let's see who else will follow suit, hopefully sooner rather than later!

Many of us have been in this conundrum: Buy new or refurbish old? It's difficult because although we'd LOVE to imitate wonderful images of fabulous old furniture revamped into lovely updated versions, your bank account may suffer during the transformation. Let me explain.

First, there are a few things you need to ask yourself when making the decision to refurbish:

1. Is the piece irreplaceable? Does it have special attributes, is it an heirloom, antique or something you just can't part with?
2. Can I do it myself or do I need to hire it out?
3. Would the cost of replacing the item be more or less expensive than refurbishing and does that matter to me?

Generally, the cost to refurbish something FAR OUTWEIGHS the cost to purchase something new UNLESS you are a do-it-yourself guru. If cost isn't as much of a concern make sure you have this information handy when asking an upholsterer or re-finisher for a quote:

1. Photograph of the item to be redone
2. Measurements of the item
3. Pictures / ideas of what you want the finish to look like and any special touches added like welts, nail heads, etc.
4. Fabric you will be using
5. Timeline

This will help you solicit bids competitively from outside sources.

Some of my favorite items have been ones that have been successfully refurbished, it just takes time, patience, and maybe a bit of discomfort to the bank account. But, you decide for yourself.

Learning Lab: Collaborative Consumption

I've always thought that neighborhoods and communities could be more connected and share resources better so I LOVED reading this article about 'collaborative consumption.' The thought behind it is that, you have something, like a lawnmower, leaf blower, etc. and your neighbor may have a pressure washer, so make some extra money by renting them out or just trade. Or say you have an extra parking space you aren't using; rent it out so someone who needs one.

Websites like Task Rabbit include postings for tasks like a Costco Run, or putting together IKEA furniture. Unfortunately there isn't one in Portland yet, but join the twitter feed and hopefully there will be one soon!

We all own a lot of stuff these days and often overwhelm ourselves with keeping it all together. These are great ideas for sharing those burdens and maybe even making a few extra dollars on the side.

Today's find is for those who love the 1970's and a bit of whimsy. This is a book called Fat Cat's Craft and Coloring Book by Karen Whyte. The condition is fabulous, no pages have seen crayons in 40 years; that's why I'm so excited about this find. The illustrations are works of art themselves by Donna Sloan. Amazon has some for sale ranging from $28 - $59.

Crafts are listed as "macrame belt" "jewelry foolery" and "candle casting" just in case you couldn't remember the essence of 70's crafting...

Project updates; a shop on hold and a house under construction

Thought it was about time I updated you all on the status of a couple jobs I've been working on. The salon is not quite open as the owners are anxiously awaiting confirmation on business licenses and the like...more on that later. The home remodel I've been working on is now officially under construction by the contractor, SLS Homes. Windows and doors are being reconfigured and replaced as we speak! You can click on my links to view the progress on their website.

Here is my drawing of what we're doing; basically the windows are being moved, we are removing an old wood stove (where the stereo will go), and creating a patio door with windows in the dining area.

I also created a lighting plan for the client to give the contractor showing new lighting locations, switching, and electrical locations.

Friday Finds: Tablecloth

So, I found a great tablecloth. I love it for a couple of reasons:

1. it is in fabulous shape
2. it was hand made by someone at some point
3. it reminds me of the wall paper I had in my bedroom growing up
4. those pom poms are killing me! I don't think I can part with this one.

You know when you find something and you think..."aww should I or shouldn't I"... this was one of those things, but I simply couldn't resist AND it goes nicely with the glazed moire tray I was talking about a few weeks ago.

I look forward to many uses of this tablecloth and the pom poms will always make me smile.

Vacation de-brief; what Interiors did I stay in?

So, first of all, vacation last week was GREAT! So good to get "unplugged" from everything literally and just enjoy family, sun and swimming. We journeyed East from here to Kahneeta in search of some sunshine and tipi weather. Have you ever stayed in a tipi? Such an experience. These are HUGE and sleep about 10.

Being interested in interior spaces I love figuring out the best layout. We settled on all the beds on one side and the food on the other. Every tipi has a fire pit inside, in the center. While this seems odd it is actually great for roasting food and of course the quintessential marshmallows late at night. The trick we discovered after a few smokey ventures, is to keep the fire really hot so it vents properly out the top, otherwise you are choking in smoke. There is one picnic styled table in every tipi as well as a tool box bolted to the floor where you can keep all your 'valuables.' My suggestion: keep those valuables on you or locked in your car.

Thank you to the Warm Springs Tribes for letting us experience a bit of your culture. I always love going to Kahneeta and the surrounding land, it seems so spiritual and peaceful.

Our next stop was Link Creek Campground on Suttle Lake where we stayed in a Yurt.The Pacific Northwest has their own version dotted throughout the landscape. These are basically round huts with a small table, futon, bunk bed, and small wood stove inside. The outside is canvas and has 3 large windows you open during the day and close at night. There is a large skylight in the center of the roof that opens as well to allow fresh air in at night. I loved the yurt; the only complaint I have is that there isn't much storage. I created "bag storage" and hung bags everywhere inside with various things to make access to items easier since the floor footprint was so small. It worked.

So, as far as interior spaces go, it was fun to experience these two. Both were different, both dynamic and quite easy to live in. I wonder what people will say years from now when they see / stay in our "homes" of the 21st century...will they be comfortable and easy?

Exterior Paint Color Help

How many of you have driven past an oops...you know, that ONE neighbor that decided to paint their house a "cheery" yellow only to have it turn out to be a neon beacon fit for landing aliens on our planet? After doing a consult last week for exterior paint colors I thought I'd throw a few tips your way to minimize mistakes and angry neighbors.

1. Look at where the building or house resides and make sure you select a color that enhances its surroundings. If all the colors are muted, select one in the same family, if they are all bright, do the same. If it is a solitary house on a hill, select something that will blend into the sky, mountains; the landscape.

2. Give yourself at least 3 choices and try them out first. There's nothing better than a second opinion especially if you live in a neighborhood with neighbors close by. Ask for opinions on your "test" swatches and meet some new friends at the same time! If you don't want to invest in cans of paint, at least get large swatches from the paint store and pin them up outside; vertically.

3. Don't forget the details. Once you select the body color, either for a house or building, select the trim color and door color. I always select at least 3 and sometimes 4 colors for a palette, that way clients have options for painting 1 or 2 trim colors plus a door, or use the last color as a coordinating color for patio furniture, light fixtures, plants and the like.

Friday Finds: Moire Glaze Tray

Today I'm sharing with you one of those finds that I found, was so excited I actually took it to show my mom (who is also a treasure hunt lover) only to hear my dad say "it has scratches" "it looks used" "why would you buy that?" He doesn't get it; that's ok. I'm happy with my fun orange tray and here's why. It is a mid century piece (hence the scratches) that was hand glazed by a company called Kyes in Pasadena California. The "moire glaze" as they describe it, gives the tray surface the look of water on the surface; some nice depth. I tried to research on the Kyes company but haven't found anything. I've seen a few of these online for sale here and there and love looking at all of the colors, shapes and sizes they come in!

On a side note, did you know that goodwill has an online auction site? There's some great stuff, including a vintage Underwood Typewriter for $8!

Spread your {love} project: the eyes have it

I'm taking a break from the usual design-inspired posts to reflect a bit. While reading a recent fellow bloggers' quest to spread a simple message of acceptance I just couldn't resist so....

I love myself. Three simple words, that unfortunately in today’s world are seldom heard. We are always trying to fix those little problems that we think are wrong with us rather than embracing what the universe has blessed us with. You should love yourself whether you are tall or short, or thick or thin… remember that you are beautiful.

They asked that we write something we love about ourselves so here goes....I love my eyes. I love eyes in general, they are a direct link to the soul. You can really see what someone else is feeling and experiencing by looking into their eyes. Mine were a gift half from my Italian mother and half from my Irish/American (code word for a mix of a bunch of other things) father. Mom, thank you for the lovely long eyelashes and dad thanks for the color blue. I've passed both the color and shape, size, eyelashes onto both my son and daughter and as I look into their eyes I see myself years ago.

Painting Love; creating memories

Some of you know that I do painting projects on the side. They are whimsical and fun and allow me to keep my hands in the craft periodically. I love doing children's rocking chairs. There's something about small chairs that are charming to me and kids are simply drawn to them. This one is the latest; a white chair with fun owls and flowers adorned with a bit of glitter and sweet words. I sell them word of mouth or on my online etsy shop.

I always place the words "you are loved...always" on the back of the chairs because we all want our children to remember that; even as they grow. I hope these chairs get passed on through the years and many good memories along with them.

Friday Finds: Travel Photograph

With Memorial Weekend beginning today I decided to officially dedicate this Friday Find to travel. Nampa, Idaho...been there? Neither have I. I love this old photograph that I found during a recent thrifting adventure it conjures up all sorts of feelings I have about travelling. Have you ever traveled by bus? I haven't done it since college days and wow, what an experience; you definitely meet some interesting folks and end up knowing a lot more than you probably wanted to about them. My college boyfriend one year used to diligently (bless his heart) ride the bus every weekend to visit me at my university so we spent a lot of time at the Greyhound stations.

Later in life and with a bit of money to spend I traveled through France and Italy by bus and at times believed my life was hanging in the balance literally on some of the meandering extremely narrow laned country roads with cliffs on either side. Was the bus experience somehow more chic in Europe? Mais non, it was absolutely the same but I was the one not speaking the language very well...the foreign voice quietly sitting by myself and keeping to myself. Travel, no matter how you do it, inevitably enlightens you in ways you never imagined. You gain sympathy, empathy and understanding as you are tossed out of your comfort zone. You meet angels and thieves and appreciate the opportunity to live among them; at least for a while.

Site Visit: Red Hills Market

On a recent date night, my husband and I found this great little Market on the outskirts of Dundee, Oregon. Being obviously interested in interior details and architecture, I had to snap a few shots while we sipped our wonderful cocktails (bloody mary heaven with a crispy bacon garnish). The owners did a fabulous job of fitting into the local architecture and feel of the community they are embracing with an historic themed storefront yet contemporary and easy interior. The food they serve is fresh, no nonsense, nothing fancy...it's comfortable. It is a market and cafe; think grab and go flowers, cheese, wonderful wine or stay for pizza cooked in a wood fired oven, sip a cocktail or go wine tasting upstairs...(I could stay all afternoon!) Oregon Wine Press did an article with more detail on the Market here.

On the interiors: I particularly loved this pendant fixture simple, transparent; says "market." The interior doesn't have much color grey, black, white with wood accents. Yet, the pale yellow display cabinets which house items for sale like local honey, bottles of wine, and yes, their amazing bloody mary mix fit in nicely and look almost like something your grandmother would have used to hold her canned goods....comfortable. Only thing I would like to see are some soft surfaces, something warm to round out the hard edges; maybe a sofa or chair to sip their wonderful Stumptown Coffee in.

I honestly hope to go back, they are anticipating a summer farmer's market on their permeable driveway along with some specials. At the very least this will become a stop along the way to the coast for sure. So, cheers to a job well done and for probably one of the best bloody mary's I've EVER had!

Salon Project Update: We have color!

This green wall will be mostly covered by the dispensary cabinetry which is IKEA's AKURUM Kitchen Cabinets in White.

Where the ladder sits will be another set of cabinets that will house the coffee/tea/micro/refrigerator cabinets; also in the IKEA AKURUM.

Along this wall is where the 3 hair / sink stations will be.

It is getting close to the time the salon project is complete! I checked in recently and the walls are painted and furniture is being put together. As with every project, nothing goes exactly as planned, but they are doing a great job getting it all fit out, keeping costs way down, and re-using or re-purposing as much as they can. For example, my client found all of her chairs, sinks, and mirrors on craigslist used for a fraction of what they would have been new. The only caveat was the color....light blue and beige....dated and doesn't go with the vibrant yellow / green theme we have going on. So, she painted the furniture and re upholstered some of the chairs to match.

Friday Finds: So, Pin Me

I love pins and have been collecting them for a while. In particular, I like to find pins from the 1960's or 1970's because I'm intrigued by the designs and colors and I like metal over plastic...most of these pins are metal. On a recent thrifting adventure I discovered these gems.

In particular, the gold pins remind me of the 1960's. Any other Mad Men fans out there? The character on the show, Joan Holloway, is usually wearing an interesting pin of some sort....ever notice that?

It got me thinking; interior spaces can be redesigned and re-purposed for anything...even if it's a double decker bus. Is this the next trend? Mobile shops; quick on the heels of the Food Cart Revolution that has happened in the City. Personally, I love it...low or no rent, no strict code laws (yet), and you can MOVE! If one location isn't giving you much business, well, try another.

Selecting Light Fixtures: a quick guide

Too many choices, too overwhelming and too expensive. Sound familiar? Often we get overwhelmed with light fixtures. What's the best way to tackle it? Ask yourself a few questions first:

1. What is my goal? Do I want a fixture that makes a statement or blends into the back ground? Do I want something that provides a lot of light, or just a bit.

2. What are the other fixtures or styles I'm trying to coordinate with? Look at the finishes (black, silver, bronze, etc.) and keep the look consistent throughout your space.

3. After you've decided on the first two questions start looking! Start with online resources and if you can, look at the fixture in person. Take photos of your space and of other fixtures in adjacent rooms you may want to match to a local lighting store so the sales people can see exactly what they need to help you work with.

4. Consider scale. A small pendant in a large hallway or foyer will look out of place. Don't forget to look at dimensions carefully before purchasing.

5. Make sure the return policy is one you can live with! We all make mistakes so it's best to work with stores and companies that have a generous return policy in case things don't work out.

This week I found myself with a client in a lighting lab going through all of the ins and outs of halogen vs. compact fluorescent vs. LED lamps. Since regulation by the EISA, quite a few bulbs will be phased out over the next year or two so it's really important to select something today that you can still work with in a few years.

I have to say, LED's are all the rage as far as energy efficiency, but I'm not in love with the quality or color of light they emit. They are cold. Remember when compact fluorescents first came out? It reminds me of that time where you had to sacrifice warmth for energy efficiency.

But, we have to consider the energy savings. Let's take a typical small halogen 50W 120V bulb you may use in your hood over your cook top. Replacing it with LED lamps would reduce your energy consumption by 84% and last 20 times longer than the halogen cousin. I know they will improve light quality in the years to come and I'm looking forward to it.

So, as your bulbs begin to burn out or as you look to replace your fixtures, and especially if you are doing new construction, don't forget to look to the future, many of what we use today will be obsolete by 2014. You might as well help reduce your carbon foot print and save a bit of energy today.

Friday Finds: Boxes with a bit of History

I'm so excited to share these finds because you don't typically see these things lying around. Usually, they never survive as they are made of paper. I have no idea how old these are, but I found them at the same time so I'm assuming they were unloaded by someone together.

The first is a vintage Brach's Candy Box measuring 6 1/2" square by 2 1/2" high. It has an interesting relief on the surface; some of the roses feel embossed on the cardboard. All the ingredients are listed on the front of the box with "E.J. Brach & Sons, Chicago" at the end. I have no idea how old this box is but if I had to guess I'd say it's probably from the 1960's due to the color and style of the flowers. Do you have a guess? Since Mother's Day is this weekend I wonder... did some mother somewhere along the decades enjoy this gift?

The next box is a Blue Bird Hosiery box measuring 9 3/4"L x 6 3/4"W x 2"H. I love the bare breasted woman riding the blue bird with her hair flowing and leg stretched out showing off her silky smooth leg. If I had to guess I'd say this isn't something the US market would have allowed, and thought hmmm must be a European brand. I did a few searches online though and couldn't find anything about Blue Bird Hosiery.

Whoever owned them kept the box to store "animal stencils" which is written on one side. The other side boasts the size (9) quantity (1/2 dozen) style number, color and price...a whopping thirty nine cents! What era would you say this is from? I initially thought maybe the 1920's or 30's due to the woman's hair style and the clothing style, but really don't know.

So that's the find of the day. I have these displayed on a shelf in my home because I find them intriguing and great conversation starters. People are always asking..."Where did you get those from?"

So, my client opening a salon this month is in the throes of remodeling love and hate. But wow, I have to hand it to her...such determination and stamina despite the fact that...the old pipes didn't work and...oh yeah...she had to re-plumb the living @#$% out of the place and..wait, is that leprechaun STILL visible under the primer? Are those old cigarette butts outside my door and is that a birdhouse (we all know how the sidewalk fares here) on my tree?

Ah, but as entrepreneurs, we fight, we move on, we imagine and are ultimately emboldened by these minor trials. I'm happy to share the new photos; mud and tape but a CLEAN slate and ready for the fun stuff. Should you want to remind yourself of the "before" click here.

This is about color, I've always loved color. Not especially bright shouting bursts but subtle shifts, nods, the ever so slight hint that makes you take a second look. Don't know if any of you have had the pleasure of visiting COLOURLovers but if you are into graphic design, interior design, trend watching, or just want something fun to peruse this site is for you. There are also fun vintage color palettes online where you can remake that 1950's kitchen to the exact hue should you so desire.

Packaging Matters; it's part of the presentation!

Something often forgotten but not to be overlooked is packaging and presentation. Since working for myself I've tried many different approaches to packaging and presenting projects and ideas to clients. I ask myself, "What would I like to receive? What would I expect?" I try to keep the branding look and feel consistent while giving my clients something they can easily transport to showrooms and stores as they look to make purchases.

Since a lot of what I do ends up on paper, I find that folders work best to organize ideas and to keep everything in one place. How do you present your products or services? I'd love to hear your ideas!

Friday Finds: Entertaining with Style

Today's vintage find is one that I've had for a while and just love. The basket looks like something someone made and for what purpose I have no idea. All I know is that it has been fun having it. It reminds me of my grandma Doris and her sister Pat; years ago as they traveled via RV they crafted hats that were crochet and sewn with tin beer bottles cut out in a pattern. The best part is that they WORE them! I was young so didn't really think anything of it, but I always remember my mom laughing at those hats. Now I wish I had one.

So thinking ahead and thinking of summer, I've used this as a tote for all those goodies that you need when outdoors. Silverware, napkins, straws; I suppose you could use it for condiments, cups...just about anything. The best part is you just leave it as is and refill as needed. It makes for a great grab and; go item.

In the back ground I've put one of my Favorite Beers...an ode to my grandma and Oregon my home state at the same time: Rogue Hazlenut Brown...a bit sweet and yummy, perfect for a warm afternoon...happy weekend and cheers!

Studying Walls; it's not as boring as it sounds

These past couple of weeks I've been studying windows and walls for a client who is contemplating changing a few things in their dining and living room. Thought I'd share one of the important design questions; "to transform the wall in the dining room into patio doors or leave the original windows?"

The first image below shows how their windows currently are in the dining room space.

Here is a look at the second image showing the option of opening up the wall to doors. Originally the thought was to put swinging french doors in, but after researching and doing some space planning I found out there wasn't going to be enough room for the french doors. I suggested sliding french doors instead.

So, we will see where we go from here; there are more studies on the window walls I've been doing too.

When deciding on something like exterior window configuration it is important to look at how this works with the INSIDE of the space. An interior designer can really focus on creating functional spaces inside while keeping aesthetics pleasing on the outside. The two have to work together.

Researching; maybe I should have worked in a lab?

I LOVE research I really do. I am intrigued by new things; love learning different ways of creating and am forever curious about others as I'm continually running the "how did they do that" mantra in my head.
So, an update on where I am this week. Knee deep sloshing through the bogs of research. Maybe that's why I'm an interior designer doing what I'm doing...every project is different; as unique as the individual. You'd think by now I'd have a great system down; streamlined my projects into one type, one experience...no, not yet anyway. The two projects I'm working on now couldn't be more different...a commercial hair salon and a living and dining room remodel in a private residence. Well, it keeps me going that's for certain and I'm grateful to my clients who provide me the opportunity to keep my research going.

Sad silver turns Happy blue; a tray transformed

Remember last week when I promised a Feature every Friday...guess what I actually made good on that promise; despite the fact that my son was sick this week, I caught a cold, I'm horribly behind on my project work AND have been sideswiped with all manner of usual family issues this past week. But hey, who's complaining...here we go...the silver tray I showed you last week has become...

Oh so lovely, right? It is happy in its new blue hue and I found another tray to pair it with and painted that one red. It's easy; just a bit of spray paint and voila, lovely things to serve drinks, display jewelry, take a friend a platter of cookies on...(your idea here).

So when you see those ugly little trays tossed aside in thrift stores etc. Think again...you may have a fun quick project on your hands!

My kids enjoyed posing with them for me pretending to be servers in a restaurant....another idea!

Smoking elephants, drinking leprechauns & rainbows, oh my!

As much as I love looking at and sharing lovely blog photos; the images in this posting are not lovely....not yet anyway. I started work a couple of weeks ago on a small salon renovation. The new salon is scheduled to open Saturday, May 21st so we are on a fast track to get this remodel completed. I want to share the before photos...

So, we have our work cut out for us. Since these were taken though; a lot of progress has been made, the place has been cleared of it's clutter, walls have been taken down to studs, and items have been repaired. We've had to wrestle a couple of leprechauns, and paint over their "happy" friends. The building is located in a prime area with a lot of foot traffic potential; we intend to make the most of that. I've made numerous trips to IKEA to solicit new furniture and decor; (we are on a tight budget) here's a sneak peek:

Friday's Finds: Vintage inspiration

I've been taking an online business class and with that I've read and been inspired by about 500 talented small creative business owners from all around the globe. I must admit, there were times when I felt hugely inferior but am working towards creating more of a presence. Another important thing I've learned (which I have hugely neglected in the past) is the importance of a blog / website / some online voice behind my business. So, I'm creating a schedule for my blog...novel idea! Friday's are going to be dedicated to things I find while I'm shopping for vintage items either for clients or my online Etsy shop Evie & Gil. Remembering Life - a visual memory

I cherish memories. Little things like hiking trips my family, or just sitting around watching a movie on a rainy day are the things I want to hold onto. My dilemma is in the documentation of it all. As the years go by I find it more difficult to scrapbook or keep track of what happens daily. I'd much rather live with gathered memories than close them up in a book. I incorporate the decor into our life.

One of my favorite bowls from my time in Avignon France still sits on my counter holding nuts in the winter, blossoms in the summer; a visual reminder of where I've been.

My kids often collect things from every trip we go on, whether it's a hike, a trip to the beach, or a foray through the forest. I want to hold onto those memories and be reminded of living every day.

How do you keep your memories alive?

Incorporating Vintage

I love old things, always have. My mom is a perpetual collector of nothing in particular, she just finds things she likes and takes them home with her. She's not a big spender, never has been; she loves the "hunt." I've inherited this gene. Often times I wander through local thrift shops and peruse garage sales for that lovely little gem to add to my collection of vintage findings. I use it as decor, sometimes it gets sold, and if I can't find the perfect use it ends up in a box of "what am I going to do with this."

So before you go, here's some advice for those of you visiting local sales and shops:

1.unsure about pairing things together? focus on color, either in contrasts or unified tones

2. if you love it buy it. simple as that. (you'll kick yourself later if you don't)

3. look at the "lines" and "shape" of something. a small side table maybe just hideously scuffed and brown, but a fresh coat of paint will give it life. an old silver tray can be spray painted to display something lovely.

4. look for a novelty like an old typewriter or lunchbox; I use my typewriter at my front door and have a scroll of "messages" typed in. my vintage lunchbox acts as a napkin and silverware holder for brunch and dinner parties.

If you want to look online, a fun site to look through is 1st dibs. You can imagine you are looking in a Paris shop or search for one in your hometown for real treasures!

Could all of P-town's Humanity be Graced by Anthropologie?

I'm a huge Anthropologie Fan; yes I love humanity and all but, notice the spelling on this a-n-t-h-r-o-p-o-l-o-g-i-e. I'm referring to the shop.

A little bird told me, (and living here in Portland you know we all love our birds... talking about Portlandia's joke on us) that Anthropologie will be opening new decorator concept stores around the nation. Unfortunately Portland is not on the "A" list of concept stores. Locations will first open at London, Atlanta, Beverly Hills, Chicago, Corte Madera, CA, Denver, Houston, Miami, Nashville, NYC, Wayne, PA and Westport, CT.

Color Selection: Oh so many choices

At a color consult over the weekend I was reminded of the fact that there is so much anxiety over selecting paint colors by most people. Why? Because there are so many choices, because it's difficult to envision a color just by seeing it in leprechaun sized swatches, because lighting makes a HUGE impact, and because partners often don't agree.
So, rather than being a relationship counselor, I'll focus on what I know, here are some color basics:

1) Pick the color you like and go 2 shades LIGHTER- Is this a steadfast rule, no of course not! I've just found that most of the mistakes people make is selecting a color that is too dark or too intense. Color intensifies when you see it on 4 walls...and please, leave your ceilings out if this, they are happiest when white.

2) Look at colors VERTICALLY. Lest we forget, color typically is for our VERTICAL walls. People often select colors while setting them on a table with direct light, just hold it on the wall and save yourself that mistake.

3) Love it! - Don't select something because you're trying to match a tired old sofa, yes they will have to blend in, but often you can update and freshen up your look from warm golden hues, for example, to soft blue/grey all the while your brown sofa stays put and looks lovely.
